What is more effective for basic self defence without gloves; Muay Thai or Wing Chun?
I want to do a striking martial art for basic self defence and am thinking of either Muay Thai or Wing Chun. It would be for the street etc and without gloves....which one would be better? Cause i know that Muay Thai moves have been put into US army training and the Chinese army do Sanshou which is basically Kickboxing and wrestling.....whereas alot of ppl tell me Wing Chun is not practical for years
Anyone giving you a definitive answer is doing a disservice. Either art works provided the training methodology and quality of instruction is there. Some people will quote Bruce Lee as he felt Wing Chun was ineffective after his first street fight. But that was one person. Truthfully any will help with ONE aspect of self defense (being hand to hand), if trained properly and in an alive manner. Which means a high level of sparring is included. I do not mean push hands, or one or two man drills and dead patterns (things that are done repeatively in the air over and over again). I mean at some point, taking safety in mind for your partners you suit up or don't suit up, and you both go at it, attempting to use your technique against a trained resisting opponent who is trying to do the same to you. People will often say Muay Thai over Wing Chun based simply on MMA, or what they think is popular or have heard. Some people will say it mainly because of training methodology. In Muay Thai you are going to get hit in training... a lot. You are going to do a lot of hitting, but you will spar hard, early and often. Whereas that isn't always the case in Wing Chun schools. You can't "train Muay Thai" if you only hit a bag. You can't "train Wing Chun" if you only use the wooden dummy and push hands. Bags are useful tools, so is the wooden dummy. But they are conditioning tools. You need to hit and spar with real live moving people to develop timing, accuracy, and the ability to react. Backs and dummies don't hit back. Skulls are harder than bags and wood. If you want competent fighting ability you have to simulate a fight as close as safely possible. Just my two cents. Any art, system, or style can be practical if trained correctly. Trained correctly you find the ways to make it work for you. Don't let anyone tell you one style or another is more practical than another. Because it isn't the style, it is the training methodology.
MMA star Simon Marcus whacks at Sonim's rugged Bolt (Albuquerque Journal)
MMA fighter Simon Marcus throws punches with a Sonim Bolt rugged phone. (Credit: Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET) How do you get your ultrarugged phone some buzz? If you're Sonim and the phone in question is the Sonim XP5520 Bolt for Rogers, the answer is as easy as hiring Mixed Martial Arts champion (and fellow Canadian) Simon Marcus to throw some punches and kicks on video (below). In it, Marcus and pals tape the heavy-duty Bolt to their gloves before sparring, to demonstrate that the phone can take its knocks. At one point, Marcus lets loose at a Bolt at another man's ear, and knocks him to the ground. It's lights out for that guy, until he momentarily revives to tout Sonim's Bolt. It's great cheese, is that's what you're into. However, it's no surprise that the phone didn't break while strapped to the impact-absorbing glove. CNET Editor Jaymar Cabebe (who knows a thing or two about MMA himself) mentioned that some of Marcus' kicks would have the force of a baseball bat. Muay Thai fighters like Marcus have been known to take down small palm trees in a single kick. [Read more] **Related Links:**
