HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PORTRAIT SHOOT
So you’ve taken the decision to have a portrait photograph done. Fabulous. It is something to be passed down through the generations, and should encapsulate your individuality and special spirit. Whether it’s a formal or informal portrait, a group or individual one, posed or candid, it’s important to do all the right preparation so that the end result is perfection.
To be the star of the show, here are a few tips from Perth portrait photographer, Freedom Photography.
Step 1 - what to wear (or what not to wear!). Portrait photograph sittings can be lengthy, and you should dress to be comfortable and relaxed.Clothing shouldn't distract attention away from the subject. It is important that you wear something that reflects the real you.
Obvious patterns, plaids, tartans, florals, checks, logos and wide stripes are OUT.Your outfit should be low key and classic. It's also important to feel comfortable and relaxed, so wear something appropriate. Tight clothing can also alter the shape of the body which will look unnatural.
Turtle or V-necked shirts or jumpers are probably best as they allow for the shape of the face to be accentuated.Exposed skin can distract attention, so it's best to wear a long-sleeved shirt. For men, a collared shirt can provide a good frame for the face.
Darker colours (black, dark blue, green burgundy, shades of grey) are generally better than lighter ones, which can make people look pale and a bit washed-out. Bright colours, like red and orange are overpowering and can reflect onto the subject’s face.Sometimes fabrics that shine (such as satin) can reflect light, so natural matte fabrics are a better choice.
When a group of people is involved in the portrait photography, it's a good idea to get everyone to wear similar shades of clothing. If everyone is dressed in a similar (but not identical) way, attention will focus on the faces and not the clothes.
What about bringing an extra set of clothes to your sitting? It's also a good idea to bring accessories such as hats, a favourite leather jacket, sunglasses etc. for a change of scenery. And bring your bag of tricks with make-up, lip balm, a light powder foundation..just in case!
And when it comes to hair - it's always wise to cater for every eventuality so bring along all your hair accessories - clips, brushes, combs and a light hairspray to keep things orderly. And tempting as it may be, having a hair cut the day before your portrait photography session may not be the best idea. Rather schedule a session when you’re feeling good about yourself.
Ask the studio for their advice ahead of time. They'll give you some pointers as to what you should do, but it's very individual. Just as there are some ‘rules’ – the rules are there to be broken.A portrait photographer in Perth, Freedom Photography says it's all about the individual.Building up trust between the parties and pushing the boundaries of convention can have amazing results (have a look at Freedom Photography's gallery which has naked torsos, crisply focused close-ups, black and white mood portraits etc).
