Predicted Maximum Heart Rate Calculation
Before beginning an exercise program it is a good idea to check out your resting heart rate, target heart rate for your age, and a predicted maximum heart rate. In order to measure progress it is good to get a start point. It also gives a target to reach in each exercise session.
Before getting out of bed take the resting heart rate, at this stage it will be at a minimum. This is the minimum heart rate that you are likely to reach. Take your pulse using a stop watch or the second hand on a clock. This is better taken over a minute for more accuracy but some people take it for 6 seconds and then multiply by 10 to get the number of beats per minute.
There is often a considerable difference in resting heart rate between people depending on genetics, fitness levels, and age, often resting heart rate can increase with age. This gives a starting point for you.
People most often have found that taking the heart rate is easiest on the wrist. This should be taken on the side your thumb is on and measures the beat in your radial artery. Use your fingers as you may get confused with a beat in your thumb which will make a count difficult. Another option often seen on TV programs is to take the pulse under the jaw on the carotid artery on the side of the neck
Having established your resting heart rate the next measure is the the predicted maximum heart rate calculation. The beats per minute is determined using this method. The target maximum heart rate is then calculated.
To calculate the predicted maximum heart rate it is best to use a cardiac stress test to get the data. Medical supervision is recommended for this test. The maximum heart rate can be determined by a doctor who looks for changes that occur when the heart is stressed. These tests are often done for top athletes and less often for the ordinary fitness enthusiast.
The predicted maximum heart rate is probably more commonly determined using a formula based on the age of the person. These formulae have been calculated by researchers using the cardiac stress test. It is best to understand that there are substantial differences amoungst individuals.
You will often have seen a chart on the wall at the gym, and sometimes it is on the powered exercise machines that gives a guide along the following lines:-
At age 30 At age 55
Maximum Heart Rate = 220 minus your age 190 165
Another acceptable formula is
Maximum Heart Rate = 205.8 minus (0.685 × age) 185 168
As can be seen the range is narrower for the second formulae and the maximum heart rate is also a little higher at an older age.
As mentioned before there is a significant difference between different people even if the fitness level and age is similar. An interesting test has been undertaken on team members on the same exercise regime, and are of similar age. Therefore these tests cannot really be applied to comparing the relative levels of fitness.

If you have arthritis in your thumb, is it a good or bad idea to exercise your thumb?
I suspect I may have arthritis in my right thumb -- all of a sudden it's steadily painful, but I am only guessing (I have not yet consulted my doctor). I wonder if using one of those hand exercisers would be a helpful thing to do, or would it just make matters worse? I'm talking about those items you grip and then squeeze together.
Don't assume that you have arthritis. There are a couple of other conditions that can cause thumb pain and since you don't know exactly what you're suffering from, it's not a good idea to treat yourself. I work in orthopedics and I can tell you that if it's arthritis, exercise is a good thing, but it has to be the appropriate type of exercise. If it's another condition, such as stenosing tenosynovitis or tendinitis, the gripping exercise you're considering would probably aggravate the condition and cause further inflammation of the nerves and/or tendons. You really should see an orthopedic surgeon to be sure that you're treated properly.
