tai chi sun style for self defence?
hi guys,
I recently came across a video of sun style taichi.
I was wondering how effective its self-defence properties are. and how quick it is to become able to use it for self defence.
I know the stances are more upright etc than other styles.
additionally, if it would take forever to be able to use taichi then how would taking the joint locks and principles of aikido and mixing them with taichi push hands go?
how long would it take to learn to use a blended system and how easy to teach etc if one wanted to do so?
Sun LuTang studied under the pioneers of the Internal Styles.
He was known to be able to defeat opponents only using footwork.
He is one of the few people who developed "light-air" skills. He could literally run up walls. His jumping skills were legendary.
Sun was highly respected and known throughout the provinces.
To understand Sun Style Taiji, you have to be taught by someone who is direct lineage - who was taught the complete Synthetic Style - which is what Sun called his teaching.
There is only ONE person in the US that knows this and to study you would have to go to his school.
Many people know Sun Style Taiji but don't know the Inner Teachings.
Sun Taiji is very powerful for self defense. The key to understanding how to apply it is in the Footwork and the Transitions between each movement.
Edit:
If you intend to "blend" any martial arts it means you're caught up in the new mentality which is counterproductive.
Taiji has joint locking and grappling techniques far more advanced than you can learn in any mma class.
If you're going to learn Sun Style to blend it with something else, then don't bother.
NO MARTIAL ART HAS TO BE BLENDED TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE!
The people who "blend" or mix any martilarts are people who never completed their training.
It's like saying you went to college but dropped out after your first semester or year.
What a waste.
